The sheer challenge of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 has been obvious from its first performance, with the composer as soloist. This was in New York City on November 28, 1909. It was repeated two days later, then again in January 1910, with the New York Philharmonic under its then chief conductor, Gustav Mahler. Yes, that one. Rachmaninov would have been unable to compose anything were it not for the Derren Brown-esque therapy he received from a man called Nikolai Dahl, to whom the concerto was dedicated. The Earl Wild recordings with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Jascha Horenstein is, in my opinion, the quintessential reading of the Paganini Rhapsody as well as the the excellent presentation of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos 1, 2, 3, and 4. I'm not sure any single survey of the Rachmaninov Piano Concertos could ever be universally definitive, since, like most great art, these works support many valid interpretations. Definitive or not, they belong alongside the famed interpretations of Rubinstein, Ashkenazy, Zimerman (for the 1st and 2nd), Richter, Argerich (for the 3rd), Trifonov Thanks to his course of hypnotherapy, Rachmaninov was once again capable of smashing out great melodies and crunchy piano parts.
